Roberto Alvarez was born in Laredo, Texas, in 1934. His parents were Mexican immigrants, and he grew up in a segregated community. Alvarez attended segregated schools and was not allowed to participate in many of the same activities as his white classmates. Despite these challenges, Alvarez excelled in school and went on to attend college.

After graduating from college, Alvarez returned to Laredo and began working as a teacher. He quickly became involved in the civil rights movement and fought against segregation and discrimination. In 1963, Alvarez was arrested for protesting against segregation in a local restaurant. He was convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Alvarez's arrest and conviction sparked outrage in the Mexican-American community. It also led to the formation of the American G.I. Forum, a civil rights organization that fought for the rights of Mexican-Americans. Alvarez became the first president of the American G.I. Forum and led the organization for many years.

Under Alvarez's leadership, the American G.I. Forum fought against segregation in schools, housing, and employment. The organization also worked to improve educational opportunities for Mexican-Americans. Alvarez's work helped to make a significant difference in the lives of Mexican-Americans in the United States.

In 1974, Alvarez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He died in 2012 at the age of 77.

Roberto Alvarez was a courageous and passionate advocate for justice. His work helped to make a significant difference in the lives of Mexican-Americans in the United States. He is an inspiration to us all.
