Peggy Breitner is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She has been a nurse, a teacher, and a community activist. She is currently a member of the board of directors of the Greater New Orleans Interfaith Clergy and Laity Alliance. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor.

In her gripping and inspiring memoir, Surviving Katrina, Peggy Breitner chronicles her harrowing experience during Hurricane Katrina and her remarkable journey of recovery and resilience.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, bringing with it winds of up to 175 miles per hour and a storm surge that flooded 80% of New Orleans. Breitner, who was living in a historic home in the Lower Ninth Ward, was forced to evacuate her home and seek refuge in the Superdome. However, the Superdome was soon overwhelmed by the influx of evacuees, and Breitner was left stranded for days without food, water, or medical attention.

Eventually, Breitner was able to escape the Superdome and make her way to Houston, Texas. However, her ordeal was far from over. She had lost everything she owned, and she was struggling to rebuild her life in a new city. But Breitner refused to give up. She found a job as a nurse, and she began volunteering with organizations that were helping other Katrina survivors.

Over the years, Breitner has become a leading voice for Katrina survivors. She has testified before Congress, and she has worked with government officials and non-profit organizations to improve disaster preparedness and response. Her story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity and to triumph over even the most challenging circumstances.
