Structural Information Theory: The Simplicity of Visual Form
By Maxim I. Braun
Structural Information Theory (SIT) is a new way of understanding the visual world. It is a theory of how we perceive and process visual information. SIT is based on the idea that the visual world is made up of a small number of basic elements, or "geons." These geons are simple shapes, such as lines, curves, and angles. When we see an object, our visual system breaks it down into its component geons. This process is called "geonic decomposition."

Once the visual system has decomposed an object into its component geons, it can then use this information to build a mental representation of the object. This mental representation is called a "structural description." The structural description of an object contains information about the object's shape, size, orientation, and location.
SIT is a powerful theory that can be used to explain a wide range of visual phenomena. For example, SIT can explain why we are able to recognize objects from different viewpoints, even if the objects are partially occluded. SIT can also explain why we are able to perceive depth in 3D images.
Structural Information Theory is a groundbreaking book that introduces a new way of understanding the visual world. This book is written by Maxim I. Braun, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Braun has spent decades studying the visual system and has developed a new theory that explains how we perceive and process visual information.
This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in vision, perception, or cognitive science. It is also a valuable resource for artists, designers, and architects.
