On May 10, 1968, Beikirch was serving as a medic with a Special Forces A-Team on a reconnaissance mission in the A Shau Valley. The team was ambushed by a large force of North Vietnamese soldiers. Beikirch was wounded in the initial attack, but he refused to leave his fallen comrades behind.

For the next several hours, Beikirch moved from soldier to soldier, providing medical aid and comfort. He exposed himself to enemy fire on multiple occasions to reach wounded soldiers. At one point, Beikirch was knocked unconscious by a grenade blast, but he regained consciousness and continued to care for the wounded.

By the end of the battle, Beikirch had saved the lives of at least ten soldiers. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism.
